Creative space

18th and 19th March 2008

to be held at Pelham House hotel and conference centre, Lewes, East Sussex.

University lecturers are faced with many competing demands and pressures. Finding time for academic writing can add stress to an already overwhelming workload. Would you like some time and space to explore strategies for making writing easier, to rediscover your creative voice, and to become more confident with your writing? Would you also like to learn techniques for helping your students with their writing? And to meet other lecturers who are also interested in developing their writing?

We will use creative writing exercises to encourage reflection upon, and engagement with, the writing process. The emphasis is on creativity, personal engagement with writing, and fun. All exercises and discussions will be framed by the academic role, but we will not directly 'teach' academic writing. The retreat will include workshop sessions and time for you to work on your own writing projects.

Pelham House has been converted from a 16th Century townhouse into a very comfortable and stylish hotel and conference centre. Each of its 32 bedrooms has been individually designed and includes original features, handmade furniture, ensuite bathrooms and everything you would expect from a 4 star hotel. The hotel has a lovely garden, which we hope to make use of during the retreat by holding outdoor workshops if the weather is fine. Pelham House is 2 mins walk from Lewes train station and has good bus and road links. The nearest airport is Gatwick. Lewes is an attractive old Sussex town with lots of small shops, bars and restaurants, and places of historical interest.

Cost £350 per person if booked before 14th December, or £395 after this date.
Places are limited so early booking is recommended.

Extra nights at Pelham House, either before or after the retreat, are available if required.
